Events in the memory of those killed in the battle field are taking place these days in Rethymno town and the rest parts of Crete, honouring the people who fought for the freedom of Crete. The people who defended our island against the atrocity of the german troops trying to take over the island during the period of the german occupation.

Nowadays we live together with the german people, we collaborate with them and we co-operate under the same umbrella of the European Union.

The sad memories though from the blood-shed battles are still fresh in our hearts. The events taking place in Rethymno town start today the 18th of May, early in this morning at 8 p.m. at the square of Agnostos Stratiotis were there will be lifting the greek flag and they end on Monday the 22nd of May at the same place with the  lowering of the greek flag.

We would like to finish this post with a characteristic Cretan phrase symbolic to our cretan spirit and character, reminding us the determination of our cretan warriors in the battle field :

“….ΔΕΝ ΤΗΝ ΠΑΤΕΙΤΕ ΕΣΕΙΣ ΜΩΡΕ…ΤΗΝ ΚΡΗΤΗ ΑΝΑΘΕΜΑ ΣΑΣ…”

(Sp. Litinas verse)

1st of May !

images-1images-2

Despite the dispute whether the current day is a holiday or strike, we shall take a look back in the very distant past in order to discover the roots of this special day which welcomes May! The month when nature is at its pick !

From May 1886 that labor unions in Chicago rose up demanding an 8-hour job with better conditions, the May 1 is established as a day of workers. It is connected with workers’ struggles and a tribute to those who perished to leave to future generations a legacy normal working conditions.

Today is a chance to be close to nature and get away from the daily routine !

The celebration of May Day is a custom that throws back its time to the ancient times. The events that took place either for goddess Demeter or Dionysus were intending to celebrate the fertility of the fields, the fruitfulness of the earth, the flowering of nature, the final end of winter and the coming of summer.

In Greece the most widespread custom of this day is the creation of a wreath full of flowers, cut from the fields, called ”protomagiatiko stefani” meaning the wrath of the 1st of May. As soon as they complete it, people hang it on the door of their house or their balcony, where they keep until June 23, which is the eve of the celebration of Klidona St. John, when they finally burn it!

Whether we believe or not in the symbolic dimensions of these customs, they still represent an important part of our folklore tradition which also allows us to get away from our daily routine and enjoy the nature at its best.

Whether you are in a big city or in the country, Greece is full of greenery and flowers, allowing us, even just for  traditional purposes, to make our own ‘’protomagiatiko’’ wreath.

Wish you a lovely month full of flowers !

Happy 1st of May !

Celebration of Saint George !

Every year , the second day after Easter, Christianity celebrates Saint George, one of the most venerated saints of

Christianity.

The image of rider Saint George slaying the dragon represents the freedom of slavery and evil and freedom itself.

Saint George is considered to be a patron in many cities and places around the world.

Here in Crete is  also widely popular and greatly honoured.

This year 2016 the celebration takes place the 2nd of May.

In many cretan villages as Koumi, Asi Gonia, for the saint’s sake and as a blessing to the faithful Christians there is given

free food and wine.

Especially in Asi Gonia village, there is taking place a really unique cretan custom,

Shepherds are taking their herds to the church so that the priest blesses them. Then the milking takes place and the milk is

given out to the people participating to the celebration.
